Dr. Tamara D. Herold is an American Crime Scientist. She is an Associate Professor of Criminal Justice at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (U.S.A) and currently serves as a senior research advisor for the National Institute of Justice where she is leading NIJ's Evidence to Action Initiative. She received her Ph.D. with an emphasis in Crime Prevention from the University of Cincinnati. She uses the crime science perspective to study place management, as well as factors associated with crowd violence. Her publications propose, extend, or test crime science models and help translate research findings into practice and policy. In 2017 and 2022, she received the Herman Goldstein Award for Excellence in Problem-Oriented Policing for her role in co-developing the Place Network Investigations (PNI) gun-violence reduction strategy and student victimization interventions. Formerly known as PIVOT (Place-based Investigations of Violent Offender Territories), PNI leverages complex police investigations and city/county resources to reduce crime in chronically violent hotspots.
