Sgt. Josh May is a 22 year veteran of the Chattanooga Police Department where he supervises the Gun Team (CGIC), a proactive unit utilzing NIBIN technology to identify and target prolific shooters. Sgt. May served as the Focused Deterrence Coordinator from 2015-2018, which headed up the CPD’s Violence Reduction Initiative (GVI), utilzing targeted enforcement (leveraging intelligence led / data driven policing techniques combined with social network analysis) on the main perpetrators of violence within the city. Sgt. May also worked served in the Gang Unit and the SWAT Team for 10 years. In 2020, Josh drafted the BJA CGIC Grant that was awarded to the CPD, establishing Chattanooga as a Crime Gun Intelligence Center. Sgt. May serves as an SME (Subject Matter Expert) with the Natinoal Policing Institute in the area of CGIC infrastructure establishment. The CPD CGIC was named one of 3 recipients of the 2023 ATF Excellence in Crime Gun Intelligence awards. A native of Memphis, Tennessee, he holds degrees in Criminal Justice and Sociology from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
