Laura L. V. King is a generational law enforcement officer who recently retired as a Chief of Police after serving as a police officer since 1996. She currently works as a Senior Research Associate for the Institute for Inverngovernmental Research as a subject matter expert for the SAFLEO and VALOR for Blue programs. Laura holds a doctorate in psychology and actively works to improve police operations through an increased understanding of the principles of psychology. She holds certifications in nutrition, fitness and coaching.
In 2020, she released her first book entitled Officer Safety: Redefined. This book was written to help law enforcement prepare for and address the psychological threats of the police work, which are as significant of a safety risk as the physical dangers of the job.
Laura King received her doctorate of philosophy and her master’s degree in psychology at Capella University in Minneapolis, Minnesota; she received a bachelor of arts degree in criminal justice management from Judson University in Elgin, Illinois. She is a graduate of both Northwestern University’s School of Police Staff and Command and of Session 265 of the FBI’s National Academy.
