Director of Security and Safety/Chief of Campus Police
Rhode Island College Campus Police
Chief James Mendonca began his law enforcement career in 1988 with the R.I. Department of Corrections, after separating from the U.S Marines.
In 1990, he joined the Central Falls Police Department (CFPD), rising through the ranks, earning numerous awards, and gaining invaluable community policing experience.
In 2013, he was appointed CFPD chief, at the onset of an unprecedented municipal bankruptcy. Under his guidance, the CFPD became recognized for professional excellence by CALEA.
After 29-years of dedicated service, Mendonca retired from CFPD to become police chief at R.I. College. Early on and during a pandemic, he became the only R.I. police chief to lead 2-agencies to CALEA accreditation.
The chief holds a BS from Roger Williams University and a MS from Excelsior College, and is also a graduate of Harvard University’s JFK School of Government, the FBI National Academy and PERF’s Senior Management Institute for Police.
Among many distinguished accomplishments, Mendonca served as President of the R.I. Police Chiefs’ Association and continues to serve on several boards and committees.
