Amy Appel is a graduate of the University of Mississippi with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and from the University of Mississippi Medical Center with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, cum laude. Amy spent the first 19 years of her nursing career in the clinical setting as a staff and charge nurse at the University of Mississippi Medical Center’s (UMMC) Pediatric Emergency Department, Mississippi’s only Level I trauma center. Amy also spent clinical time as a flight nurse with UMMC’s AirCare, a helicopter-based emergency medical service. For the last seven years, Amy has been in UMMC’s Department of Clinical Risk Management, the last two as the Director. Amy is a Certified Professional in Patient Safety and a Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management.
Amy collaborates closely with UMMC Police and Public Safety Department (UMMC PD) working to improve patient safety and limit workplace violence. She also serves on UMMC PD’s Threat Assessment Team. Amy is also a member of the Workplace Violence Prevention Training Working Group that is currently planning a formal de-escalation training for UMMC’s approximately 10,000 faculty, staff and students.
