Edward Flynn's police career spanned 45 years, 30 of which were spent as a chief executive. He started in the Jersey City Police Department where he climbed the ranks of officer, sergeant, lieutenant, captain and Inspector . He would retire from the Milwaukee Police Department where he was its chief for ten years. In between those experiences he served as chief of police in Braintree, MA, Chelsea, MA, and Arlington, VA, where he led recovery efforts at the Pentagon after the 9/11 attack. He returned to Masschausetts to join the governor's cabinet as Secretary of Public Safety and Homeland Security for three years; developing its regional approach to Homeland Security and leading planning efforts for the 2004 DNC, before becoming police commissioner in Springfield, MA. From there he was recruited to lead in Milwaukee, achieving historic lows in violent crime. He was inducted into George Mason University's Evidence-Based Policing Hall of Fame, received the Robert Peel Medal from Cambridge University, Leadership Awards from PERF, the NEIA and recognition from the Major Cities Chiefs Association. IACP bestowed its Webber Seavey Award on Milwaukee under his leadership.
