Deputy Chief of Police Montgomery Police Department, Illinois Yorkville, Illinois, United States
Unfortunately, most law enforcement executives receive no preparation on how to deal with politics in the police and work environment. Leaders all deal with politics in one form or another and there is no procedural manual on how to successfully maneuver in this area. Too many learn how to maneuver in the political environment through trial and error. This session will focus on preparing a strategy for dealing with political influences (both internal and external) in the police environment. Some internal factors include patrol, command staff, policies, and budget. External factors include the community, elected officials, media, legal systems, and others. The presenter will share their own best practices and review those presented.
