Lieutenant Travis County Sheriff's Office, Texas Austin, Texas, United States
It is well known that heart disease occurs more frequently and at younger ages in police officers than in the civilian sector. Currently heart disease is one of the top killers of men and women in uniform. In the United States, the average age of an officer who suffers a heart attack is 46 and life expectancy of a police officer is 22 years less than in the civilian population. Standard cardiac risk modeling has now been proven to be outdated and inadequate at detecting officers at risk for heart attack. Groundbreaking, evidence-based research will be presented detailing the techniques needed to identify "at risk" law enforcement officers. Treatment strategies will be discussed to eliminate this elevated risk in identified officers.
