Officer Well-Being in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police: Evolving Over 10 Years from Peer Support to Ongoing Psychological Screening, Member Reintegration, and Investment in Research
Chief Human Resources Officer Royal Canadian Mounted Police Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
The presentation will be of interest to those who deploy strategies to mitigate the psychological trauma that can result from a critical incident, or the culmination of events over an officer’s career. It will focus on how the RCMP evolved from making decisions on funding mental health programs based on assumptions and anecdotal accounts; to now capitalizing on evidence-based data gathered from our three largest initiatives: Psychological Health Screening, Officer Reintegration and the Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Longitudinal Study. These initiatives allow the RCMP to identify trends such as when mental illness is most likely to occur during an officer’s career, and to whom, enabling us to target mental illness prevention efforts where they will have the greatest impact.
