Director of Investigations
Electronic Frontier Foundation
San Francisco, California, United States
Dave Maass is Director of Investigations at the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), a non-profit organization that advocates for civil liberties in the digital world. Dave's research focuses on law enforcement surveillance and border security technology, using public records to learn more about how these tools are used and abused. As a Reynolds Scholar in Residence at the University of Nevada, Reno Reynolds School of Journalism, Dave leads the Atlas of Surveillance project (atlasofsurveillance.org), which documents which technologies are in use in which cities and counties across the United States. He also co-teaches journalism courses on cybersecurity, surveillance, and freedom of information laws. Your agency has probably received one of his, or his students', thousands of public records requests. Dave's award-winning work is regularly cited in the media, academic papers, and legal briefs. Prior to joining EFF, Dave Maass worked as an investigative reporter in Phoenix, San Antonio, Santa Fe, and San Diego.
