Typical basic and in-service police use of force training often unknowingly does not factor in the cognitive ability and time constraints on officer decision-making under stress in use of force. This can prevent officers from recognizing a need to change tactics or force modalities while engaged in an incident. Incorporating police jiu-jitsu techniques and enhanced decision-making frameworks into officer training scenarios at the Mesa Police Department has led to a positive use of force results, including a reduction of overall use of force incidents, significant increases in officer decision-making abilities to apply multiple or varying use of force or tactical options, and significant reductions in major injuries to citizens..
